In the case of Coffee, though our Crown Colonies have increased their production enor mously, and this is particularly the case in Uganda and East Africa, their total production is still tiny compared with that of South and Central America and the Dutch East Indies.

Nevertheless, the future possibilities are immense if the necessary assistance is provided.

In the matter of cocoa, the development of the production in the Crown Colonies has been perfectly amazing and whereas in 1901 the Crown Colonies only produced about one third of the world's supply, by 1913 they were producing well over half, while to-day it would appear that Nigeria and the Gold Coast which in 1901 were producing a negligible amount, are now responsible for more than the rest of the world put together.

Owing to the fact that figures for foreign countries are not yet available for such recent years as the figures for the Crown Colonies, it is not possible to make an exact comparison, but the above comments are near enough to indicate the position.

The above figures are not strictly comparable as between Colony and Colony, because some- times the figures relate to ginned and sometimes to unginned cotton. They indicate, however, the progress in each Colony.

There is also some cotton grown in the following other Crown Colonies:--Ceylon, Gold Coast, Sierra Leone, Gambia, Bahamas, Turk's and Carus Islands, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, British Guiana.

India and Egypt come second and third respectively as producers of raw cotton, the United States still retaining its outstanding pre-eminence.

The Crown Colonies are, as yet, producers on but a tiny scale relatively to these three countries, but the rate of increase and, in some instances, the high quality produced are auguries of a great position later on.
