I am enclosing a programme for the information of His Excellency.

I have, &c.,

The Private Secretary to

His Excellency the Governor General.

SIR,

I HAVE the honour to transmit to you, for your information, a copy of a despatch from the Resident Commissioner of the Bechuanaland Protectorate in forming me of the intention of the Chief Mathiba and a section of the Batawana tribe to contribute towards one of the Imperial war funds. I also enclose a copy of my reply.

THE HIGH COMMISSIONER to THE SECRETARY OF STATE.

(Received 29th June, 1915.) [Answered by No. 36.]

(Northern Rhodesia. No. 486.)

High Commissioner's Office, Cape Town, 12th June, 1915.

I HAVE the honour to transmit to you a copy of a despatch from the Adminis- trator of Northern Rhodesia, reporting that certain Angoni chiefs have collected among themselves a sum of £32 0s. 114d, to be presented to His Majesty the King as a contribution towards the purchase of a military aeroplane.

I have, &c.,

Enclosure in No. 35.

(H.C. 43.)

MY LORD,

Enclosure 1 in No. 34.

Resident Commissioner's Office,

Mafeking, 10th April, 1915.

I HAVE the honour to report, for Your Excellency's information, that Chief Mathiba and his section of the Batawana tribe have contributed £40 8s. Od. in cash and 101 head of cattle which, with most loyal expressions, they desire to be appro- priated for providing donations towards such Imperial war funds as Your Excel- lency may decide upon.

2 It is proposed to sell the cattle, but the Resident Magistrate, who has taken them over, is having them herded for the present, as prices are just now abnormally low and they would not realize more, on the average, than about 258. per head.

3. I shall be glad if Your Excellency will authorise me to convey to Mathiba. by the next N'gami mail, your appreciation of this gift and of the expressions of loyalty which accompanied it.

His Excellency

The High Commissioner,

Cape Town.

I have, &c.,

F. W. PANZERA, Resident Commissioner

THE ADMINISTRATOR, NORTHERN RHODESIA, to THE HIGH COMMISSIONER. (No. 174.)

MY LORD,

Administrator's Office, Livingstone, Northern Rhodesia,

31st May, 1915.

I HAVE the honour to send herewith a letter from some of the Augoni chiefs near Fort Jameson, with a translation, and a covering letter from the Native Com- missioner, Mr. Sandford. Mpeseni Jele is the chief of the East Luangwa Angoni, and the others are mainly lesser Angoni chiefs under him; they have collected amongst themselves a sum of £32 0s. 114d. to be presented to His Majesty the King as a con- tribution towards the purchase of an aeroplane.

2. The list of subscribers gives some names of small chiefs who have not signed the letter. The last six signatories to the letter are not chiefs, and their subscrip- tions are probably included in the last item, "Fort Jameson Town."

3. I have sent copies of these letters to the London Board of the British South Africa Company, who will pay over the money subscribed to such fund as may be decided upon.

His Excellency

The High Commissioner

for South Africa, Cape Town.

I have, &c.,

L. A. WALLACE,

Administrator.
