The Journal would not, in any case, be published until the beginning of next year, and there would therefore be a saving in this estimated expenditure of about £1,200 during the current financial year. Thus it was estimated that the balance in hand at the end of the financial year would not be less than £4,000. Dr. Butler further pointed out that the estimates were made out for one year only, and no account was taken of the increasing expenditure entailed by salary increments. The total yearly increase under this head would be about £100, but as a set-off against this, there was the possibility that increased contributions might be obtained from certain Colonies which had at present refused. After discussing Dr. Butler's proposals, and the details of the estimated cost of publication, the Committee unanimously decided that the financial position of the Bureau justified the under- taking. The Committee accordingly approved the additional expenditure of £199 detailed above, and authorized Dr. Butler to proceed with the recruitment of the necessary staff with a view to issuing the first number of the Abstracting Journal in January, 1922.
It was further decided that steps should be taken to inform all contributors of the forthcoming publication, and that, with a view to reducing running costs, as much space as possible in the Journal should be allotted for the acceptance of advertisements.
The question of the printing of the Journal by the Stationery Office was raised, and the Committee recommended that the Stationery Office should be approached through the Colonial Office on this matter.
