198. 4d. On Professor Farmer's recommendation, it was decided to consider only such expenditure as would be necessary during the current year, and the estimate was accordingly reduced to £314 198. 4d. This sum included items, amounting to £72, which would be required when the Bureau undertook the publication of an Abstracting Journal.

After considering the estimated expenditure in detail, the Committee recom- mended that a sum not exceeding £315 be allotted from the funds of the Bureau for the purchase of furniture, etc., required during the current financial year.

MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE FINANCE SUB-COMMITTEE OF THE IMPERIAL BUREAU OF MYCOLOGY, held at the Colonial Office on MONDAY, THE 20th of June, 1921, at 2.30 p.M.

Present:

PROFESSOR FARMER (in the chair). CAPTAIN HILL.

DE. BUTLER (Director).

MR. SIMBON (Secretary).

THE Committee proceeded to deal with the question of further expenditure on furniture and fittings to complete the equipment of the Bureau. Dr. Butler stated that the original estimate of expenditure under this head must be considerably increased in consequence of the transfer of the Plants Tests Branch of the Ministry of Agriculture to Harpenden and the removal of their furniture from the Head- quarters of the Bureau. He estimated the total necessary expenditure at £431

(1) That Dr. Butler should attend the summer meeting of the American Phytopathological Society in July, and that a sum not exceeding £300 should be set aside from the funds of the Bureau to cover the expenses incurred by Dr. Butler in attending this meeting.

(2) That a further sum not exceeding £315 be allotted from the reserve fund for the purchase of furniture and fittings required during the current financial year.

The Committee then proceeded to deal with Dr. Butler's proposal that the Bureau should undertake the publication of an abstracting journal. Dr. Butler pointed out that the Bureau had been promised an annual income of £4,550 for three years from the 1st of January, 1921. He said that the expenditure at present authorized for the current year was £2,391, but that certain items had been under- estimated, and it would be necessary to add the sum of £139 (recurring) on account of rent, telephone, insurance, and cleaning, making the total amount up to £2,530. The estimated cost of publishing an Abstracting Journal came to £1,880, made up as follows:-
