Further, in his first paper dealing with Shetland whaling in the season of 1903, Mr. Haldane mentions, but does not record the sex of, a finner 84 ft. long. The averages of mature males and females given for the years 1904 and 1905 in Haldane's papers agree closely with the corresponding figures from Finmark The frequency of exceptionally high and Ireland set out in the table on p 101.
maxima, however, excites suspicion of careless measurement on the part of the Norwegians to whom Haldane was indebted for his information. It is greatly to be hoped that further observations, of a kind calculated to remove or confirm this suspicion, will be made at the Scottish stations.
