No. 7.
NEW ZEALAND.
THE GOVERNOR to THE SECRETARY OF STATE.
(Received 24 May, 1913.)
Government House, Wellington, 15th April, 1913. WITH reference to your despatch, No. 74, of the 20th February,* on the subject of the proposal to establish an Imperial Bureau of Entomology in London, I have the honour to transmit to you the enclosed copy of a memorandum which I have received from the Minister of Agriculture dealing with the points raised in your despatch.
I have, &c.;

on the assumption that the sum would be reasonably small. In this case, however, the Committee, while much appreciating the offer of the Municipality, feel that it would perhaps be hardly fair for the Bureau to take a contribution from the Council. The Ceylon Government, as you are aware, have undertaken to contribute £100 per annum for three years to the Bureau, and the Committee incline to the view that this contribution from the Government of the Island as a whole should suffice to cover any work which the Council may wish the Bureau to undertake on their behalf. Inter alia, the Ceylon Government receive, in return for their contribution, 10 free copies of each number of the "Review of Applied Entomology," which is published by the Bureau, and the Committee have suggested that your Government might be willing to supply one or two copies of the "Review" to the Council, which will thus obtain the literature for which they have asked, and that the Council should then subscribe for as many additional copies of the "Review" as they may desire. As
you will see from the" Review," the annual subscription is very small. 3. I should be glad if you would communicate with the Council in this sense, provided that you see no objection to the Committee's proposal.
Enclosure in No. 7.
I have, &c.,

Department of Agriculture, Industries, and Commerce, Wellington, THE HONOURABLE THE PRIME Minister,
11th April, 1913. WITH reference to the attached Government House Record, No. 264/13, covering a despatch from the Secretary of State for the Colonies, in regard to the establishment of an Imperial Bureau of Entomology in London, I beg to inform you that I note with satisfaction that the scheme has met with such universal support that the Secretary of State has felt justified in giving his approval of the work of the Bureau being commenced forthwith.
In accordance with the request contained in the despatch, arrangements are being made for copies of all publications issued by the New Zealand Government which touch in any way on entomological matters in relation to agricultural, medical, or veterinary work to be forwarded direct to Mr. G. A. K. Marshall, Director of the Bureau, and these will be despatched as soon as possible.
With regard to the representation of this Domition on the Management Com- mittee, the High Commissioner is being asked to select and nominate a member of the present Entomological Research Committee, London, as our representative.
Regarding the payment of this Dominion's annual contribution of £200 towards the expenses of the Bureau, the High Commissioner is being instructed to also give this matter his attention. The current year's subscription will be paid as early as possible, while that for the years 1914 and 1915 will be paid on or about the 1st April of each year, as desired.
