[Answered by No. 81.]

Government House, 12th August, 1912. I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch, "Miscel laneous," of the 12th ultimo,* on the subject of the financial contributions to be made by the West Indian Colonies towards the expenses of the Entomological Research Committee. The Board of Agriculture has agreed to make an annual contribution of £50 from its funds towards these expenses, and I informed you of this in my telegram of the 10th instant. †

2. In case it may become necessary to increase this contribution in the manner indicated in the fourth paragraph of your despatch under reply, I shall be glad to be given a further opportunity of consulting the Board.

I have, &c.,

E. J. E. SWAYNE,

SIR,

Governor.

THE ACTING GOVERNOR to THE SECRETARY OF STATE. (Received September 3, 1912.)

(No. 326.) SIR,

Government House, 12th August, 1912.

I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch, No. 125, of the 26th March,† with regard to the proposals made by the Entomological Research Committee to enable a visit to be made to one or more experimental stations in the United States of America by an entomologist in the employment of this Government. 2. The matter was referred to the Board of Agriculture, who propose to con- sider the selection of one of the entomologists in their employment at a later date, it being inadvisable, in their opinion, that an entomologist should proceed to the United States until the spring, as no field work is done during the winter.

3. I would ask that the thanks of the Board of Agriculture and of this Govern- ment may be conveyed to the Entomological Research Committee for their generous

offer.

I have, &c.,

S. W. KNAGGS,

Acting Governor.

No. 62.

JAMAICA.

THE GOVERNOR to THE SECRETARY OF STATE. (Received 3 September, 1912.)

[Answered by No. 81.]

King's House, Jamaica, 16 August, 1912. I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch, Miscellaneous, dated the 12th ultimo,* informing me that the Entomological Research Committee are willing to extend the scope of their work to the West Indies but that it is impossible for them to do so unless a sum of £250 per annum is guaranteed by the West Indian Colonies, and suggesting that Jamaica should contribute £50 a year as her share of this amount.

2. In compliance with your request that you might be informed by telegram whether this Government is willing to provide the necessary subvention, I despatched the following message to you on the 10th instant‡:-

"With reference to your despatch 12th July, vote of £50 will be included in Estimates for next year.'

3. I would beg leave to observe, however, that, as provision for the appointment

of an Entomological Officer under the Colonial Government is also under considera- tion, I cannot guarantee that this vote will also be agreed to.
