their co-operation. As a result photographs have been received from the Honourable Dr. Ker, Dr. Sinclair, and Mr. G. H. Deer. Thanks are due to these gentlemen, especially to Mr. Deer and Dr. Sinclair.
I enclose, with the photographs, a numbered list,* the corresponding numbers being on the backs of the photographs.
The collection is not altogether what one might desire, but the views are the best that could be secured in the circumstances.

I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch, Miscellaneous, of the 6th May. 1913. asking that photographs showing the typical scenery, and illustrating the different aspects of the life of the inhabitants, of Jamaica and its dependencies may be supplied for the use of the Visual Instruction Committee in connection with a set of lantern lectures in the British Possessions in the West Indies, in South and Central America, and in the Western Atlantic, which Mr. A. A SET OF LANTERN LECTURES TO BE PREPARED. Aspects of Life Here.
Committee appointed by Governor to deal with the matter.
The Visual Instruction Committee of the Colonial Office have arranged with Mr. Algernon E. Aspinall, Secretary of the West India Committee, to prepare a set of lantern lectures on the British possessions in the West Indies. The Secretary of State for the Colonies.has requested that the Committee may be provided with à series of photographs showing the typical scenery and illustrating the different aspects of the life of the inhabitants of Jamaica. The task of collecting this series of photo- graphs has been entrusted by the Governor of Jamaica to a Committee consisting of the Director of Agriculture, the Director of Education, and the Secretary of the Institute of Jamaica.
The Committee feel that it is desirable that the photographs sent to England for the purpose indicated, while being thoroughly typical of life in the Colony, should be as unhackneyed as possible, and it is convinced that there must be in the island many photographs taken by both amateurs and professionals which would be very suitable for the purpose.
They would be glad if any who are prepared to assist in the collection of a series of photographs to provide for lantern views to illustrate a lecture on Jamaica in England would kindly send any photographs at their disposal to the Secretary of the Institute of Jamaica. If need be the Committee are prepared to pay sumns, varying from 1s. to 4s. per photograph, according to the value of the photograph for the purpose required.
The following list* is given as suggestive of subjects for illustration, but the Committee would be glad to have photographs of any kind dealing with characteristic aspects of Jamaica life.

SIR,
In reply to your letter of the 7th instant (No. 13527/12304), and with refer- ence to previous correspondence, I have the honour to transmit herewith 92 views of Jamaica.
When I was first asked to undertake work in connection with this matter it occurred to me that the only satisfactory way of making the collection of photographs required in a suitable manner would be to take a month's leave, a motor car, and a camera. As this appeared impossible a notice was inserted in the newspapers, of which I enclose a copy, and copies were sent to the Heads of Departments asking
