SIR,

Downing Street, 6 June, 1912. WITH reference to the letter from this Office of the 5th of October last,* on the subject of the lectures prepared by the Visual Instruction Committee, I am directed by Mr. Secretary Harcourt to transmit to you to be laid before the Mar- The Sea quess of Crewe, the accompanying copy of a book of lectures entitled " Road to the East," which has now been issued by the Committee. The lectures deal with the possessions in the Mediterranean, and in the East, other than India, and particulars of the cost of the slides illustrating them will be found on page iv of the book.

2. It has not been considered necessary to prepare special editions of this book adapted to the needs of the different Colonies, and if it was desired to make use of the lectures no expenditure would be incurred beyond the actual cost of purchase of slides and of copies of the book. The prices at which the slides are sold are given on page

iv, and I would invite your attention to the fact that slides illustrating single lectures or parts of lectures may be purchased separately.

[To 5 and 6 only: A few of the slides in the second and third lectures are dupli- cates of those in the first lecture of the Mauritius edition of the lectures on the United Kingdom, and a reduction would be made from the cost if it were preferred not to purchase them. The views of Mauritius and the Seychelles are derived almost entirely from the photographs transmitted in Sir C. Boyle's despatch, No. 32, of the 26th of January, 1906.*]

[To 7, 8, and 9 only: A few of the slides in the second lecture are duplicates of those in the first lecture of the Eastern Colonies edition of the lectures on the United Kingdom, and a reduction would be made from the cost if it were preferred not to purchase them.]
