The results of my work are so far—
62
(1) By means of animal experiments, cultural tests, and serological experi- ments I have succeeded in proving that leprosy is due to a streptothrix (actinomycosis-like) germ which breaks up into acid-fast fragments. (2) By choosing an appropriate animal, viz., the rat, I have transmitted
the disease direct from the human being to animals.
(3) A bacterial extract has been produced which gives a marked rise of temperature on injection into lepers, and possibly may have curative effects.
I expect to have my first communication in print within a fortnight's time, but in the meanwhile my work has had the full control of Professor Hewlett of King's College, and both Sir Patrick Manson and Dr. Daniels have seen my sections, &c.
I should like now to be given a chance to continue the work where the curative effects of the bacterial extract could be controlled on a sufficient number of patients. As far as experiments on animals can be relied upon to give a result applicable to human pathology it appears possible by such means to bring the disease to a stand- still.
I take the liberty to accentuate the fact that I have already achieved definite results, and that step by step my work has been progressing since October last year at my own expense, except for a small grant from the Tropical School. trust, therefore, to be in a different position from an applicant who wishes to carry out work on a subject for which he has no results to show at the time of application. Moreover, the research intended is on definite and promising therapeutical lines, and, in case successful, may mean a considerable saving in the upkeep of leper asylums.
As soon as my paper appears in print I shall send
you a copy for perusal.
