PROFESSOR RONALD ROSS to COLONIAL OFFICE.
(Received 7 October, 1911.)
Johnston Tropical Laboratory, University of Liverpool,
5th October, 1911.
MY DEAR KEITH,
I SHOULD like to suggest the following matter at the next meeting of the Advisory Committee of the Tropical Diseases Research Fund.
"That the Secretary of State be advised to invite the Royal Society to form a Committee of Entomologists who have made a particular study of mosquitoes, with the object of giving an authoritative classification of the culicidæ for official and general use."
I understand that we have now accumulated sufficient information_regarding mosquitoes to render an authoritative classification possible. The reasons for making the suggestions are as follows. Up to the present, several systems of classification have been suggested. Though all of these are based on sufficient knowledge and good reason, they are all more or less different, and therefore cause much confusion, both as regards the teaching of students and in the labours of the many medical men in the tropics who are now engaged in studying or collecting insects, and who cannot always obtain the latest literature. An authoritative classification would probably do away with this confusion.
I anticipate that the Committee will not cost anything unless distinguished entomologists from abroad are invited to attend in England. This source of expendi- ture could, however, be avoided by obtaining their opinions in writing.
