Downing Street, 27 May, 1910. SIR,

I HAVE to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 25th of May,* addressed to the Earl of Meath, and to enclose, for the information of the Gold- smiths' Company, a copy of the "Times" report of a lecture on the work of the Visual Instruction Committee which was delivered in June, 1909, before Her Majesty the Queen, then Princess of Wales, together with a statement of the expenditure actually incurred, and estimated, to the 31st of August next.

I have to add that the Committee receives no grant from the Government.

India Office, Whitehall, S.W., 4 July, 1910. I AM directed by the Secretary of State for India to acknowledge the receipt of Sir C. Lucas's letter of 26th May, enclosing a proof of a set of eight lectures on India which have been prepared for the Visual Instruction Committee of the Colonial Office.

In reply, I am to say that Lord Morley has no objection to the issue of the lectures in their present form, subject to the not unimportant alterations noted in the enclosed memorandum. A few suggestions have also been noted on the proof forwarded with your letter, which is returned herewith.

Goldsmiths' Hall, London, E.C., 16th June, 1910. THE Goldsmiths' Company have made a grant of £100 towards the further sum required by the Visual Instruction Committee to complete their survey of the whole Empire on uniform lines. I enclose cheque, and shall feel obliged by a formal receipt.

The Company will not feel able to incur further responsibility for the annual upkeep of the work of the League.

On behalf of the Committee on Visual Instruction, I have to express most grateful thanks to the Goldsmiths' Company for the generous grant of £100, which, as you intimate in your letter of the 16th of June, they have been good enough to make to the funds of the Committee.

Apart from the substantial nature of the grant, my Committee highly appreci- ate the interest thus shown by the Goldsmiths' Company in the important task which they are endeavouring to complete.
