(Received 6.42 p.m., 8th January, 1909.) TELEGRAM.
[Answered by No. 3.]
8 January. No. 1. I have received a despatch from Acting Resident Com- missioner, Bechuanaland Protectorate, dated 2nd January, enclosing letter from the Acting Magistrate, Tsau, Ngamiland, dated 14th December, in which he says that information has recently reached him through native sources that a disease which, from the description, may be sleeping sickness, has appeared at a Mosarwa village in the marshes near Boro River, about eighty miles from Tsau, where tsetse fly is very prevalent. A native affected is said to remain for days in a comatose state, eating ravenously until his abdomen is so extended that he is scarcely capable of moving. He then falls away in condition, and becomes daily weaker until death supervenes. It appears that the natives recollect a similar outbreak some years ago, when they say that the disease was very slow in its course, and that the patient lingered on from two to three years from the time the symptoms were first noticed. Acting Magistrate was proceeding at once to village where the sickness has been reported, to make enquiries on the spot. If this is really sleeping sickness matter may be very serious, and I should be glad of full instructions from you what to do. Can members of Sleeping Sickness Commission now in Central Africa be com- municated with, and can they help? I have not yet informed any of the South African Governments, which will certainly be very alarmed when they hear of it.- SELBORNE.
