work, and a new factor appears in this year's report, viz., topographic reconnais- sance work; this work was urgently required in order that farms could be blocked out on paper.

This report would not be complete if some reference was not made to the Second Rapid Allotment Scheme, this work considerably relieves this Department, and it is to be hoped that it will be continued as required.

L

Mr. Ortlepp, a Licensed Surveyor, has been entrusted with the topographical survey and tertiary triangulation of some 200 square miles of country on the Northern Guaso Nyiro River. On completion of this work, he is under contract to lay out, with advice of a Committee from the Land Board, a series of suitable farms; the total cost of the whole work being the fees for the farms surveyed at the ordinary schedule rates. The work, however, will be strictly supervised, especially with regard to beaconing, &c., and he will be compelled to beacon in the regulation manner prescribed by the Department, or forfeit his claim to full payment.

Generally, the whole Official Staff has behaved in a very satisfactory manner, and I trust that during next year there will be less cause to reprimand any member of the staff than during the present financial year.

I append the following list of statements :-

I. Survey fees received.

II. Maps and plans prepared and supplied.

III. Detailed statement of farms, &c., surveyed.

IV. Comparative annual statement of lands surveyed.

V. Rapid allotment.

VI. Cost per acre of lands surveyed.

VII. Staff list (follows that of Trigonometrical and Topographical Branch). VIII. Outstanding surveys.

I trust this report will explain lucidly the details of the working of this Branch, and yet will be found concise enough for the purpose required.

A. E. TOWNSEND,

Deputy Director of Surveys (Cadastral Branch).
