Besides this there is a Supplementary Staff (costing £6,627 in 1907) and an Inspection Staff.

Appointment and position of Crown Agents. The three (rown Agents are appointed by the Secretary of State for the Colonies. They receive a letter signed by an Under or Assistant Under Secretary of State informing them by the direction of the Secretary of State that they have been appointed-and their appointment is gazetted and notified by circular despatch to the Colonies. They do not hold office under any instrument. Apparently a Crown Agent could be dismissed by the Secretary of State. No compulsory retirement age has been laid down, but if the Secretary of State can dismiss a Crown Agent he must have power to order him to retire on pension. No case of either description however appears so far to have arisen.

On 7th April, 1881, Mr. Anderson, M.P., asked in the House of Commons whether Her Majesty's Government

public to understand that the Crown. Agents' are servants of the Crown and that Her Majesty's Government is responsible for their actions.
