MY DEAR Lucas,

28

No. 55.

MR. H. J. MACKINDER to SIR CHAS. LUCAS.

(Received 10 December, 1908.)

[Answered by No. 59.]

2, Tanfield Court, Temple, London, E.C.,

9 December, 1908.

I Now send you further correspondence which has taken place with Messrs. Newton, the upshot of which is that instead of having two issues of the slides, the one coloured and the other black and white, as lately proposed in order to meet possible competition, Messrs. Newton have agreed to reduce the price of the coloured series, leaving our agreement with them standing in all other respects. I have been into the question in detail, and think that the bargain now made is as close a one as we can possibly obtain. I hope you will agree to the terms, which hardly require the sanction of the Committee in that they are better than those which were sanctioned.

2. Everything is now complete, except for the actual printing off of the copies of the book and the binding. This will still take a few days, and Christmas will then be upon us.

It would, I think, be useless to issue a notice to the Press until the new year has turned, but on the 3rd or 4th of January your paragraph could be sent round. Everything will then certainly be in readiness.

3. Shall I send to the Colonial Office a certain number of copies of the book, together with slips conveying the compliments of the Chairman of the Committee, to be sent out for review, or shall I direct Messrs. Waterlow to send the books out with slips from the Chairman of the Committee? In the latter case would you be good enough to let me have your list of newspapers? to which I will get Sadler to add educational papers.

4. I propose obtaining an addresser, and circulating the preliminary matter to the persons named in Sadler's list, in each case with a slip from the Chairman of the Committee.

Yours, &c.,

H. J. MACKINDER:

29

of December 7th. We note attached to your letter the alterations you have made in set 5 and set 7.

With reference to your remark about Messrs. Waterlow selling the book of lectures, as we stated previously, we have no objection to this.

We are, &c.,

H. J. Mackinder, Esq.
