No. 42.

MR. A. S. CHAMBERLAIN to THE VISUAL INSTRUCTION COMMITTEE.

[See No. 44.]

The London School of Economics and Political Science,

Clare Market, Kingsway, London, W.C.,

18 August, 1908. DEAR MR. NOALL,

WOULD you please be good enough to show to Sir Charles Lucas the enclosed copies of a letter from the India Office to Mr. Mackinder and my reply? My estimate of £35 is based on figures obtained from the accounts in connection with the Indian edition, and allows for a margin of a few shillings.

(J. and P. 2736.)

SIR,

Believe me, &c.,

Enclosure 1 in No. 42.

A. S. CHAMBERLAIN.

India Office, Whitehall, London, S.W., 13 August, 1908. WгTH reference to the correspondence ending with your letter of the 3rd June, 1907, I am directed to state that a request has been received for the supply to the Government of the North-West Frontier Province of a copy of the series of lectures, and of a complete set of the lantern slides which have been prepared to illustrate the Indian edition of your lectures on the United Kingdom.

I am to request that you will be good enough to inform me whether it is now possible to comply with this request, and if so, what would be the cost of the extra set of slides now required.

21

I was cordially received by His Excellency Earl Grey at Government House, and through the letters which you had kindly sent to the Minister of the Interior I was able to get official help towards transport facilities, which culminated in my obtaining free passes from the three chief railway companies as well as from the Government line. These passes, according to custom, expire on 31st December, but I am told it is probable further facilities will be granted on my communicating from Vancouver in February next.

Upon leaving the Dominion capital, I travelled by steamer along the Ottawa River and Lachine Rapids to Montreal and thence by rail to Toronto and Winnipeg.

From Winnipeg I travelled west as far as Glacier, in British Columbia, by the line of the Canadian Pacific Railway, and have returned to Winnipeg by the more northerly route of the Canadian Northern Railway.

I hope to meet Mr. Mackinder again before I leave Winnipeg to receive any further instructions from him, but my programme, as at present arranged, is to visit the fruit district of the Niagara Peninsula, get autumn scenes generally in the east, and visit Newfoundland before going again west to Vancouver.

About middle of October, as assumed in your letter, I expect to proceed to Hong Kong, Weihaiwei, the Malay Peninsula, and Borneo, returning to Canada about the third week in February for winter scenes in the Dominion, and springtime subjects, such as orchard blossom.

Believe me, &c.,

Sir Chas. Prestwood Lucas, C.M.G., &c., &c.
