REPORT BY THE INSPECTOR OF SCHOOLS ON LANTERN LECTURES.
During the past eight months fifteen lantern lectures have been given in various parts of Trinidad. None were given in Port-of-Spain as it was thought they would be of more educational value in rural districts, nor has it yet been possible to visit Tobago with the lantern, though it is proposed to do so when an opportunity offers. The first lecture was given at Couva by the Inspector of Schools with the assist- ance of Mr. Urich (Chief Clerk and Assistant Inspector) as lantern manipulator. At this, as also at the subsequent ones, the attendance included a considerable number of adults besides the children for whom these lectures were primarily meant. As a rule the Warden, or one of the School Managers, or some prominent resident in the quarter presided, and much interest was shown in the pictures presented, particu- larly when they were coloured ones. The calcium-carbide light was worked very satisfactorily, and the slides sent out from England appear to have been judiciously selected. There were, on an average, from about 130 to 140 persons usually present. At the lantern exhibition at Tunapuna Canadian Mission School the interest was greatly augmented by the Reverend Dr. Morton kindly translating the lecturer's comments into Hindi, much to the edification of the East Indians, who formed the majority of the audience.
To Mr. Urich belongs the entire credit of conducting these lectures, for after the first one he not only managed the lantern, but also very frequently assumed the part of lecturer.
At many of the schools the pupils rendered suitable patriotic songs, and on every occasion the proceedings concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.
It is very evident that these lectures are serving a most useful purpose, and are in an attractive manner spreading knowledge of the conditions of life in the mother country which could not be so well imparted by any other means.
Below will be found a list of the places at which lectures have been given with dates, &c.

THE HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR CANADA to SIR C. P. LUCAS.
17, Victoria Street,
DEAR SIR CHARLES LUCAS,
London, S.W., 6 August, 1908.
You will be interested to learn that we have just received a letter from the Minister of Customs in reply to those which we wrote to him on the 10th of July, respecting Mr. A. Hugh Fisher's photographic apparatus, informing us that he has issued instructions to the Collectors of Customs at Quebec and Montreal to admit the same without examination, and has drawn attention to the fact that the packages would require very careful handling.
Believe me, &c.,
W. L. GRIFFITH.
