Sleeping Sickness and Blackwater Fever Expeditions. Undertakes to expend an equivalent 131

amount to that expended by the Government. States Facilities which the British South Africa Company offer.

Directs the payment of £500 to the Liverpool School from East Africa Funds, the amount to be charged to the Joint Medical Department of the East Africa and Uganda Protectorates; a contribution of £250 will be avail- able from British Central Africa Funds on April 1.

Acknowledges receipt of No. 65 and states that the Crown Agents have been instructed to pay to the School contributions from the East Africa, Uganda, and British Central Africa Protectorates.

Acknowledges with thanks receipt of No. 67; states arrangements made for the Expeditions and transmits copy of a letter from the British South Africa Company asking that the Sleeping Sickness Expedition may begin work in Rhodesia on the Congo State boundary. Enquires whether the offer of the Government to pay passages would permit of the Expedition going to Rhodesia direct.

Sleeping Sickness and Blackwater Fever Expeditions. Forwards extract from a letter from Dr. Kinghorn and desires that the requests for facilities may be granted. Requests that copies of the latest and best maps, &c., of the districts indi- cated may be furnished for the use of the expeditions,

Acknowledges receipt of Nos. 68 and 69; agrees that one or both the doctors employed on the Sleeping Sickness Expedition should proceed to North- eastern Rhodesia via Cape Town, and agrees to an expenditure not exceed- ing £100 from British Central Africa Protectorate Funds towards the cost of the journey; states that the Com- missioner will be requested to furnish special licences for shooting; adds that maps of the territories to be visited will be furnished in due

course.

Research Work by Medical Officers. States, in reply to No. 63, that the Colony is not in a position to incur the ex- penditure involved in the scheme suggested, but that Dr. Allwood proposes to undergo a special course of study at his own expense.

Reports grant of one year's leave on full pay to Dr. F. Grenier to proceed to England for the purpose, and requests that necessary arrangements may be made.

Reports that motion introduced by the Government Secretary was not pressed to a division as the Combined Court are not in favour of the proposal, and consider that medical officers should take such steps at their own expense.

Acknowledges receipt of No. 75 and states that Dr. Grenier has been in- structed, as a first step, to attend the course of the London School.
