§ IV.—Apprehension of Deserters from Merchant

Vessels.

416. The Act 15 & 16 Vic., c. 26 (1852)* enables the Crown to carry into effect arrange- ments with foreign Powers for the apprehension and surrender of seamen, not being slaves, who may desert from merchant vessels belonging to a subject of such Powers when within His Majesty's dominions. The following list shows the ar- rangements (in the shape of treaties, conven- tions, agreements, declarations, notifications, and Orders in Council) at present existing between Great Britain and the Foreign Powers named for the mutual surrender of merchant seamen deserters.

* The provisions of this Act have been repealed, and the Law on the subject is now contained in § 238 of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1894.
