LAW OFFICERS to FOREIGN OFFICE.

WE are honoured with your Lordship's commands, signified in Lord

Temple, 1st June 1876. Tenterden's letter of the 13th ultimo, stating that, with reference to our report of the 10th ultimo, he was directed by your Lordship to transmit to us the accompanying translation of a letter from the Spanish Minister at this Court claiming compensation for the four Spanish sailors lately detained at Gibraltar on a charge of being illegally on board the British vessel "Amalia." That Lord Tenterden was to request that we would take the enclosed letter into our consideration, together with the previous papers, which were returned to us therewith, and favour your Lordship with our opinion as to the answer that should be returned to the Spanish Minister.

That in our opinion the Spanish Minister may properly be answered that Her Majesty's Government admits the right of the four Spanish sailors to compensation.
