LAW OFFICERS to COLONIAL OFFICE.

Lincoln's Inn, June 26, 1866. We are honoured with your commands signified in Sir Frederic Rogers' letter of the 25th instant, stating that he was directed by you, Sir, to transmit to us copy of a letter from the Council Office, dated the 22nd instant, with printed copy of a petition to the Queen from Mr. Sidney Levien for leave to appeal to the Judicial Committee of Privy Council from the Court of Special Commission to try persons concerned in the recent disturbances in Jamaica; and further stating that he was directed to request that we would inform you what course should be taken by the Home Government on behalf of the Government of Jamaica, and that we would at once take whatever steps might appear to us necessary to secure that the matter was properly argued before the Privy Council on the part of the Government.

In obedience to the request contained in the said letter, we have the honour to

That we think the proper course will be to request the Lords of the Treasury to cause their solicitor to instruct Mr. Hannen, or (if Mr. Hannen cannot attend) Mr. Thomas Jones to appear for the Crown (with the Attorney and Solicitor General) on the petition of Mr. Levien, and to watch, and (so far as proper) to oppose it on the Crown's behalf.

In the meantime, we will endeavour, if possible, to procure a postponement of the case till a later day than to-morrow.
