(m) A skeleton of the case which it may be expected will be put forward on behalf of the Company has been drafted, and another outline case for the Govern
ment.
(n) The question of the maintainability of the Company's income, and the factors which will be likely to affect the multiplier, have engaged attention, among such factors being the liability of the Company to competition. Steps are being taken to collect evidence from other ports as to their charges, facilities for docking, repairing, &c. Mr. Tan Jiak Kim, a member of the Legislative Council and a shareholder in the Straits Steamship Company, has made a statement regarding the unwillingness of Chinese shipowners to use the Company's wharves and docks, and his statement can be supported by the evidence of other shipowners.
9. Mr. A. R. Adams, an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court, residing at Penang, has been retained by the Government as Junior Counsel, and also to do solicitor's work in connection with the case.
