(One of the letters found in the meeting house at Un Long; translation forwarded

I knew the correspondence was going on. I do not recognise the handwriting of the red placard, No. 4.

(Found in the meeting house at Un Long; translation forwarded on the 24th April.)

I have examined the handwriting in the books marked Z 1 and Z 2. Z 1 is in the handwriting of Tang Fuk, who is the younger brother of Tang Chak Hing, and ac- countant in the I Un Shop kept by Tang Chak Hing. Z 2 is written by Tang Mung U, my nephew, I cannot account for the books being found in my store. They may have been thrown into my store when the people were running away.

I have seen the book marked Z 2 before. The accounts contained in these books went through the hands of Tang Po Shan and Tang Fo Lung. Tang Fo Lung is teacher in the ancestral temple school at Ha Tsun. Tang Po Shan is a loafer. He is opium smoker. He lives at Shek Kong Tsun. My son is named A Ngai. He is 18 years old. He is now at home. He is learning business in my shop. My son was at Un Long. I was at Ha Tsun. I heard that my son was present with Tang Tsing Sz, Ng Ki Cheung, and Ng Fung Cheung I was not present myself. Tang Chu Shan made a search in Ha Tsun for Tang Cheung.

Tang Chek Ting states:-

TANG CHEK TING.

Tai Po, May 11, 1899.

Tang Po Lung is a man of good character; Tang Po Shan is also teacher. As I have stated, they kept the account in the books Z 1 and Z 2. They were employed by the elders of Ha Tsun. They had nothing to do with the resistance offered to the British. As to my son, A Ngai, people say he was at the meeting house at Un Long when Tang Cheung was murdered. I did not see Tang Chu Shan looking for Tang Cheang. The villagers said he was looking for him.

The wife of the murdered man also told me ringleaders in Ping Shan were Tang I Yau and Tang Fong Hing; at Un Long, Ng Ki Cheung and Ng Fung Cheung; at Kam Tin, Tang Kok Lam and Tang Chuk Sam; in Pat Heung, Tang Fung; in Lung Kwet Tau, Tang Chui Shek; in Cha Hang, Man Cham Tsun.
