Ordinance No. 27 of 1890.
*AN ORDINANCE enacted by his Excellency the Governor of Mauritius and its Depen-
dencies, with the advice and consent of the Council of Government thereof.
To provide for the payment of grants out of public funds in support of the Established Church of Scotland, the Church of England, and the Roman Catholic Church in Mauritius, and for the distribution of such grants.

Be it enacted by his Excellency the Governor with the advice and consent of the Council of Government, as follows:----
1. There shall be paid yearly out of the Public Treasury a sum of Rs. 6,583 in support of the Established Church of Scotland in Mauritius.

2.—(1.) Out of such sum of Rs. 6,583 a salary of Rs. 4,000 per annum shall be paid

(2.) The balance of Rs. 2,583 shall be paid to the Presbyterial Committee of the said Church in trust to be applied towards the payment of clergymen and catechists not on the Establishment, provided that such payment shall not give to any such clergymen or catechists any right to pension or retiring allowance. Provided further, that the President of the Presbyterial Committee shall before the 1st April in every year transmit to the Receiver-General a detailed statement of the expenditure of the funds received from Government during the previous year, which statement shall be laid on the table of the Council of Government.
(3.) If in any year any of the above sums be not withdrawn from the Treasury, or if only part of any such sum is withdrawn, the amount undrawn shall not at the close of such year lapse to the Public Treasury, but shall remain available and may be withdrawn in the following year,
(4,) It shall be competent for the Presbyterial Committee, should the members thereof be at any time unanimous as to the expediency of so doing, to make an internal re- adjustment of the salaries accruing to those on the staff of the Church of Scotland.
3,-(1.) There shall be paid yearly out of the Public Treasury a sum of Rs. 34,533 in support of the Church of England in Mauritius,
(2.) Out of such sum the sum of Rs. 31,200 shall be applied to the maintenance of the present fixed Establishments of the Church of England with facilities for re-adjust- ment and distribution on vacancy.
(3.) The balance of Rs. 3,333 shall be paid to the Bishop and Commissioners of the Church of England in trust to be applied by them towards the payment of ministers and catechists not on the Establishment. Provided, that such payment shall not give to any such minister or catechist any right to pension or retiring allowance.
(4.) If in any year any of the above suma be not withdrawn from the Treasury, or if only part of any such sum is withdrawn, the amount undrawn shall not at the close of such year lapse to the Public Treasury, but shall remain available and may be withdrawn in the following year.
Provided further that the Bishop of the Church of England shall before the lat of April of each year transmit to the Receiver-General a detailed statement of the expenditure of the funds received from the Government in the preceding year, which statement shall be laid before the Council of Government,
4. There shall be paid yearly out of the Public Treasury a sum of Rs. 102,520 in support of the Roman Catholic Church in Mauritius,
5. Out of such sum the sum of R1.65,700 shall be payable for the maintenance of the existing fixed Establishments of the Roman Catholic Church in Mauritius.
6. The balance (Rs. 36,820) shall be distributed and applied as follows :— (1.) For priests to be added to the Establishment on a salary of Rs. 1,500 each per annum, provided that such additional priests shall not have any right to pension or retiring allowance

(2.) For repairs and construction of churches, chapels, and presbyteries (3.) 7.-(1.) The above sums amounting to Rs. 36,820 shall be paid by the Receiver- How the sum General on production to him of the following documents and vouchers :-

(2.) If in any year any of the above sums be not withdrawn from the Treasury, or if only part of any such sum is withdrawn, the amount undrawn shall not at the close of such year lapse to the Public Treasury, but shall remain available and may be withdrawn in the following year.
8. shall be the lay members. At the end of 1891 two members whose names shall be drawn by lot will cease to be members. The remaining members will then appoint by ballot two members to fill up the vacancies.
(3.) At the end of 1892 two members whose names shall be drawn by lot will cease to be members; and the remaining members shall appoint by ballot two other members to fill up the vacancies.
(4.) At the end of each year after 1892 the two members who are senior by appoint- ment shall retire, and the remaining members shall by ballot appoint two members to fill up the vacancies.
(5.) Outgoing members may be re-elected.
(6.) The Vicar-General shall be the president of the Committee, and he shall have an original and a casting vote in case of equality of votes.
