STRATEGIC IMPLICATIONS OF THE SIQUALION IN CHINA
Draft Report by the Joint Planning Staff
In anticipation of instructions we have examined an appreciation by the Foreign Office on the implications on British policy and interests in the Far East of Communist domination of the whole of China. We have consulted the Colonial Office.
2.
The Foreign Office consider that their political and economic appreciation is not complete without an analysis of the strategic implications; they have therefore asked for the views of the Chiefs of Staff regarding both the China/Pacific area and the Central/South Bast Asia area on:-
(a)
The general strategic implications of the situation in China as foreshadowed in the political and economic appreciation.
(16)
What military action can be taken in the fore-
seeable future.
(c)
3.
What practical means can be devised for military consultation and information, bearing in mind
that political differences in the area would render it difficult to arrange consultation on a regional basis.
Our report, which takes into account the views of the Commanders-in-Chief, Far Hast, as expressed in their paper+ on the "Measures Required in View of the Communist Advance in China", is at Annex.
In addition the Commanders-in-Chief, Far East have signalled their views on the way the situation in China may affect Hong Kong. Our report on their views and the Colonial Office comments on them are at Appendix to the Annex.
