CONFIDENTIAL

VHF Contact is dependent on a "visual" channel between trans- mitter and receiver, (i.e. contact is not possible when a hill intervencs.) This should be berno in mind. It may be necessary for a pilot transmitting messages to climb up from his patrol area to report what he sees.

Supply Dropping by Sunderlands:

(a) Although this operation was carried cut, it is emphasised

that a Sunderland is not suited for this employment and therefore the drops took far longer to complete than would have been the case if Dakotas were used. In a real operation Dakotas would be available and it is hoped to use them in the next exercise.

(b) The Sunderlands here being used out of role. Two

Sunderlands could have guarded both flanks of the N TERRITORIES against unk-borne invasion throughout the exercise. In a real operation this would have been done, probably.

Defence of KAI TAK Airfield:

It is quite clear that, with the present Garrison available, the Army cannot accept any responsibility for the close defence of KAI TAK airfield and that this must be the respon- sibility of the RAF itself.
