My immediately preceding telegram.
I have received message through United States Embassy from Consul General Canton that all personnel of Consulate General are safe and that order has been restored.
2. Hy immediately following telegram contains text of message telegraphed by United States Consul General Canton, this afternoon to United States Embassy, Nanking, and to State Department giving account of events in Canton to-day.
3. I have just received assurance from the Minister for Foreign Affairs that orders, which were sent off by Executive Yuan three days ago to prevent disorder, have now been re-enforced and local authorities have been instructed to place armed police guards on Consular premises and those of British firms. A public statement expressing profound regret of Chinese Government and mentioning foregoing orders to local authorities is being issued to-night.
