The above three examples show that the Briti sh
still maintain the old and worn-out attitude of twenty years
ago towards their Colonies.
They illustrate that the
conservatism of the British has not changed in the least
to me et modern requirements.
Of course conservatism is
in the national tradition of the British but as now
applied to the Colonies it must be regarded as a short-
coming. We do not wish to discuss whether British colonial
policy as a whole is right or wrong, but as regards Hong Kong
we feel it necessary to raise some points for the consider-
ation of the British people. The question of the retrocess-
ion of Hong Kong will in due course be dealt with by the
Governments of Britain and China but from the Chinese
viewpoint Hong Kong was originally a part of China and was
ceded only on account of the disgraceful "Opium War". But
