conservative in their policy towards their colonies, as is
shown by three views recently expressed on the subject of
the future of Hong Kong:-(i) a correspondent of "The Times"
expressed the view that the entry of Chinese, especially
poor Chinese, into the Colony should be restricted and that
the free port status should be abolished. Many people
regard this article as anti-Chinese. (ii) A Labour M.P.,
Mr. Williams, advocated in "The New Statesman" that Hong
Kong should not be returned to China but should be an
asylum for Chinese political offenders and that the University
of Hong Kong should be developed as an organ for controlling
Far Eastern thought. His article is being criticized as
offensive. (iii) Sir Alexander Grantham stated that he
believed Hong Kong would remain a British Colony and that
even the Chinese wished it to remain so. This statement
well illustrates the conservatism of the British and is
