FIGHTER FORCES.
10.
Uvler existing plans for the deployant of British air forces in the Far East, ono single-engined fighter squadron oquipped with Spitfire XIVs is located in Hong Kong. The Spitfire XTV is a first line fightor ared with 20m. carmen and two .5 nachine-guns, it can also onrry babs.
Its performance and, in particular, its initial rate of olub make it ominently suitable for defence against the type of onemy air attack which is visualized. It is therefore considered that this squadron, supplemented by Naval fightors, is sufficient to ensure reasonable socurity against air attack by day. It is considered that provided the day fightor defence system is maintained at a high degree of officiency, chony losses in daylight attacks would probably force hin to resort to spasmodic night attacks on a small scale. In consequence it is considorod that an essential requirement for defonce against this form of attack will be a force of modern night fighters equipped with airborne radar. This force nou not be large and it is suggested that throo night fighters equipped with airborne radar be made available as a detachant fra: the main night fighter forces in alaya. This detachint to be reinforced na ocension lands.

(a)
(0)
A central Nightor operations and filter room and two G. C. I. stations.
The fighter porations room should be the contral and co- ordinating authority for all R.A.F. ani laval fighters operating fra shore bancs in the Colony.
Bach G.C.I. station should control interceptions within its specified area, such intorcoptions should be co-ordinated through the fighter operations room.
•
Local Chinese citizens will be required to supplement the monning of the fighter operations room, filter room and G. C. I. stations. These civilians should be trained by the R..F.
Navy and any liaison officers will be required to work in the fighter operations room and maintain touch with Navy and Army Headquarters.
AITI-AIRCRAFT DEFENCE.
15.
It is suggested that the bulk of the anti-aircraft defences should be mobilo. A very close liaison between the fighter operations rock and the control of anti-aircraft fire is an essential requirement.
