I am commanded by the Air Council to acquaint you for the information of the Secretary of State for the Colonies, that the Chiefs of Staff Committee at a recent meeting had under reconsideration the justification for building an airfield at Ping Shan (Hong Kong) and, after examining the evidence laid before them, endorsed the recommendation made to them on behalf of the Council that such justification no longer existed as a Service requirement.

The Committee recommended, therefore, that all work on the airfield be abandoned forthwith and instructions to this effect have been conveyed to the Commander-in-Chief, Hong Kong, in Cabinet Office telegram 02.1343 dated 29th March 1946, a copy of which has been forwarded to your Department.

I am at the same time to draw your attention to the hope expressed by the Committee during their deliberations that the Secretary of State in concert with the Minister of Civil
