AIRFIELDS IN

FAR EAST

BRITAIN TO SPEND

£20,000,000

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT

SINGAPORE OCT. 2

A total of £20,000,000 km! be spent by

the British Government on the building; and reconditioning of airfields in South- East Asia. Of this sum more than £8,000,000 will be spent on airfields on Singapore Island.

These figures are given by Air Marshal Sir Leslie Hollinghurst, air member for supply

and organization, and Sir James Barnes, deputy Under-Secretary of State for Air, who have arrived at Singapore on their way to Britain after completing a survey of R.A.F. bases in the Far East.

In Singapore they have conferred with Air Marshal Sir George Piric, allied air Commander-in-chief, South-East Asia, and

with the Governor-General, Mr. Malcolm MacDonald, and the Governor, Sir Franklin Gimson.

The two biggest projects in the 10-year air plan for South-East Asia are the airfields at Changi, on the western tip of Singapore Island, nd at Butterworth, on the mainland opposite Penang Island. At Changi £2,000,000 is

to be spent on the construction of 3,000 yard permanent airstrip, which will take the heaviest bombers and civil air liners in the orld. At Butterworth £3,000,000 will be spent in laying a concrete airstrip and on sermanent administration buildings.
