These regulations restrict the use of artificial sweeteners in food. Under these regulations, no artificial sweetener may be used unless it is included in the list of permitted artificial sweeteners contained in the Schedule to these regulations.

PUBLIC HEALTH AND URBAN SERVICES ORDINANCE. (Chapter 132).

FOOD AND DRUGS (COMPOSITION AND LABELLING) (AMENDMENT) (NO. 2) REGULATIONS 1969.

In exercise of the powers conferred by section 55 of the Public Health and Urban Services Ordinance, the Governor in Council has made the following regulations—

1. These regulations may be cited as the Food and Drugs (Composition and Labelling) (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulations 1969 and shall come into operation on the 1st January 1970,

Regulation 2 of the principal regulations is amended by inserting, before the definition of "container", the following—

"artificial sweetener" means any chemical compound which is sweet to the taste, but does not include any sugars or other carbohydrates or polyhydric alcobols;”.

3. The Second Schedule to the principal regulations is amended by inserting, after item 7, the following—

Artificial sweeteners and foods and beverages con- taining artificial sweeteners.

Every container containing an artificial sweetener or a food or beverage which includes an artificial sweetener shall be marked in a conspicuous and easily legible manner in the English and Chinese languages with the name of the artificial sweetener and the quantity of the artificial sweetener con- tained therein.",
