Revocation and replacement of regulation 49.

15. Regulation 48 of the principal regulations is revoked and replaced by the following-

"Position of fuel tanks.

48. No fuel tank shall be placed under any part of a gangway which is within two feet of any entrance or exit-

(a) of a single-decked omnibus; or

(b) on the lower deck of a double-decked

omnibus: or

(e)

of a light bus, other than a light bus which

is propelled by a compression-ignition in- ternal combustion engine.”.

16. Regulation 49 of the principal regulations is revoked and replaced by the following--

"Precautions against

leakage from fuel tanka

and fuel lines.

49. (1) In an omnibus and in a light bus-

(a) the fuel tanks shall be so placed that no

overflow of fuel from them car-

(1) fall upon any woodwork; or

(ii) accumulate where it can be readily ignited:

(b) the filling points of all fuel tanks shall be

outside the body of the vehicle;

(c) filler caps shall be-

(i) provided for the filling points of all the fuel tanks; and

(ii) so designed and constructed that they can be permanently fixed in position; and

(d) any vent hole in the filler cap, shall be so

designed as to-

(i) be protected from danger of penetra- tion by fire; and

(ii) prevent fuel from splashing out.

(2) In an omnibus and in a light bus, other than an omnibus or light bus which is propelled by a com- pression-ignition internal combustion engine-

(a) a fuel cock shall be provided by means of

which the supply of fuel to-m

(i) the carburettor; or

(ii) the fuel injection equipment,

may be immediately cut off;

(b) the means of operation of the fuel cock shall be visible and readily accessible from the outside of the vehicle; and

(c) the "off" position of the means of operation of the fuel cock shall be clearly marked on the outside of the vehicle.”.

17. Regulation 51 of the principal regulations is revoked and replaced by the following-

"Exhaust pipes.

51. (1) In every omnibus and every light bus the exhaust pipe shall be so fitted or shielded that- (a) no inflammable material can be thrown upon

it from any other part of the vehicle; and (b) it is not likely to cause a fire through proximity to any inflammable material on the vehicle:

(c) the exhaust pipe and all apparatus connected with it shall be maintained in such condition as to prevent so far as practicable any fumes from entering the vehicle.

(2) ln every omnibus the outlet of the exhaust pipe shall be placed---

(a) on the off side of the vehicle; and

(b) far enough to the rear of the vehicle to prevent, so far as practicable, exhaust fumes from entering the vehicle.

(3) In every light bus the outlet of the exhaust

pipe shall be placed-

(a) on the off side of the vehicle; or

(5) at the back of the vehicle,

so as to prevent, so far as practicable, exhaust fumes from entering the vehicle.".

18. Regulation 56 of the principal regulations is revoked and replaced by the following—

"Steps.

56. (1) In every omnibus and every light bus- (a) the top of the tread of the lowest step for any entrance or exit (other than an emer- gency exit) shall not be more than seventeen inches or less than ten inches above the ground when the vehicle is empty;

(b) all steps shall be fitted with non-slip treads;

and

(c) fixed steps shall in no case project laterally beyond the body of the vehicle, unless they are so protected by the front wings or other- wise that they are not liable to injure ped- estrians.
