SUNGEI UJONG.
This state, which is under British protection, is situated to the north-west to Malacca. Its area is roughly estimated at 500 square miles, and a range of hills of the north attain a height of about 3,800 feet, the slopes of which have been pro- nounced by Ceylon planters as most suitable for the cultivation of coffee, cocoa, &c. On the lower ground, nearer the coast, tapioca is successfully cultivated. Tin min- ing is carried on to a considerable extent. The population is estimated at 10,000 Chi- nese and 4,000 Malays, &c. The British Resident is the virtual ruler of the state. The revenue for 1886 was $120,740. Trade is steadily progressing; its value in 1885 was-imports $580,429, and exports $577,373.
