This state occupies the southern portion of the Malayan Peninsula, and its capital, also called Johore, is situated on the Old Strait, or Silat Tambrau, which divides the island of Singapore from Johore territory. Like the other Malayan States, Johore, which is ruled by a Maharajah, is under British protection. The territory is steadily improving under the present liberal rule.
