The Government is confident that there will be adequate teachers who are able to teach in the Chinese medium in Secondary One classes from the 1998/99 school year onwards.

For years beyond 1998/99, the HKIEd and Education Department will continue to provide the pre-service / in-service courses and workshops mentioned above. In addition, the Hong Kong Baptist University has indicated that it will introduce "teaching in mother tongue" as a topic in the subject of "Teaching Principles and Subject Instruction" in its Postgraduate Diploma in Education course with effect from the 1997-98 academic year. University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong have also indicated that they will review the curriculum of their teacher training courses to provide support for teachers in mother tongue teaching.
