"The induction programme is designed for immigrant children aged between six and 15 who have arrived in Hong Kong from China for less than one year.

"The extension programme provides new immigrants aged between nine and 15 with remedial teaching to improve their English," she said.

Each class will be of 60 teaching hours.

Non-profit-making voluntary agencies can now obtain application forms from the Adult Education Section, Education Department at Room 1106, 213 Queen's Road East, Wan Chai.

Application forms can also be obtained by post by sending a self-addressed envelope to the section.

All completed applications should reach the Adult Education Section not later than February 17.

Induction courses were first introduced in April 1995. Since then, 812 induction courses have been run by voluntary agencies throughout the territory and more than 10,500 immigrant children have attended.

Meanwhile, 420 extension courses have been run to enable some 5,300 children

to improve their English.

Family of traffic accident victim awarded $80,700

The Social Welfare Department (SWD) has awarded $80,700 from the Traffic Accident Victims Assistance (TAVA) Fund to the family members of a man killed in a traffic accident in Fanling last month.

The man, aged 61, was the driver of a light goods vehicle which collided with other vehicles in Fanling Highway on December 30 last year. The deceased was survived by his wife, a son and three daughters.
