Public reminded not to steal water from fire hydrants

The Water Supplies Department today (Sunday) reminded the public that it was an offence to tap water from fire service installations for non-fire fighting purposes.

"The offence carries a maximum fine of $5,000 and a further fine of $200 per day for continuing offences," a spokesman for the department said.

Among a number of court cases recently, a driver and four construction workers were found guilty of using water from on-street fire hydrants for non-fire fighting purposes.

"The driver was fined $6,000 while the penalties on the four workers ranged from $4,000 to $10,000," he said.

Another case involved a cleansing company in Ngau Tau Kok which had carried out unauthorised alterations to a fire service facility and used the water for washing. The company was fined $4,000.

Also, a food caterer in San Po Kong and an employee of a seafood shop in Ngau Tau Kok were charged with illegal use of fire service water supply for cooking and washing. They were fined $1,200 and $1,500 respectively,

Applications for running induction programmes invited

The Education Department is inviting applications from non-profit-making voluntary agencies to run induction and extension programmes for new immigrant children from China.

The programmes are aimed at helping these children to adapt to the local environment and providing educational support, especially remedial teaching of English, for them.

A senior education officer, Miss Wong Yuk-ha, said, "Government subvention will be in the form of a block grant covering expenses for teaching staff, centre administration and basic teaching equipment."
