Tsim Sha Tsui fire roundup

Thirteen persons who were either overcome by smoke or sustained burn injuries in a No. 3 alarm fire in Tsim Sha Tsui early this (Saturday) morning are still being treated in hospitals.

The fire, which gutted a karaoke club and claimed 15 lives, has been classified as arson and is being investigated by the police.

Various government departments, including the Social Welfare Department, the Home Affairs Department and the Labour Department, have made concerted efforts to take remedial measures to assist the fire victims and their families.

On the part of the Social Welfare Department and the Home Affairs Department, social workers and HAD liaison officers are now keeping close contacts with the management of the hospitals to assist those admitted. Affected family members who want to enquire about information of the victims and related welfare services may contact the Medical Social Work Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on 2958 7078. Officers of the two departments will also reach out to the family members of those killed in the fire.

The Labour Department has set up two hotlines 2852 4029 (during office hours) and 9432 9829 (outside office hours) - for family members and relatives of the employees of the club who were injured or killed in the tragedy.

The Kwong Wah Hospital has also set up a hotline- 2781 5220 to answer enquiries from members of the public on the fire victims up to 9 pm today (Saturday). Public enquiries on the case after 9 pm can be forwarded to telephone 2332 2311 extension 1202.
