Stage I, which involves straightening of the Lok Ma Chau bend and the Liu Pok bend, commenced in 1995 and will be completed on schedule in mid-1997.

A $126-million contract was awarded by DSD last month for the Stage II advance works which cover the reprovisioning of the border security fence and the adjacent vehicular access between Lok Ma Chau and the estuary.

Preparatory works for the Stage II main works, which comprise the widening and deepening of the existing river and embankment, are being carried out and scheduled to start in the first half of 1997.

Stage III, which will involve similar widening and deepening works upstream of Lo Wu Bridge, is scheduled to start after completion of Stage II works.

Wan Chai district festival to cater for all residents

Wan Chai residents will be able to know more about their district through participation in more than 30 festival activities which will be held early next year.

Adopting the theme of "Prosperity and Stability in Wan Chai", the Wan Chai Festival '97 will be held from January 3 to 31.

Revealing details of the Festival at a press conference held today (Sunday), Wan Chai District Officer, Mrs Elaine Tang said the events were aimed at encouraging residents' participation in community activities.

Mrs Tang added that special festival events have been organised for disadvantaged people and new arrivals to foster their sense of belonging to the district.

"Disabled persons will be able to join hands with able-bodied people in giving performances at a concert and take part in an orienteering competition," Mrs Tang said.

To enhance social integration of the new arrivals, they would be encouraged to take part in various festival activities either as spectators or performers.
