STI to attend meeting in Switzerland

A Hong Kong delegation led by the Secretary for Trade and Industry, Miss Denise Yue, left for Switzerland tonight (Friday) to attend an informal ministerial meeting in Lausanne on June 1 and 2 to discuss the future work programme of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

This visit is one of a series of preparatory meetings being held in the run-up to the first Ministerial Conference of WTO this December, which will chart the course of global trade liberalisation in the future.

The Lausanne meeting is hosted by the President and Federal Minister for Economy of Switzerland, Mr Jean-Pascal Delamuraz, and will be attended by the trade ministers or senior officials from seventeen other WTO members, including Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Korea, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Morocco, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Africa, and Thailand.

The Hong Kong delegation comprises Permanent Representative of Hong Kong to the World Trade Organisation, Mr Stuart Harbinson; Director-General of Trade (designate), Mr Alan Lai; Deputy Director-General of Trade, Mr Tam Wing-pong; Assistant Representative of Hong Kong to WTO, Mr Bryan Chan and Assistant Secretary for Trade and Industry, Miss Monica Chen.

On the invitation of the Government of Norway, Miss Yue will go to Oslo for a two-day official visit on July 3 and 4 after the Lausanne meeting.

During the visit, she will exchange views with senior Norwegian government officials and business leaders on matters of mutual interest.
