Vigorous training for proficient fire-fighters
The Fire Services personnel have to go through the mill of a tough and vigorous training to ensure the efficiency and proficiency of fire-fighters, the Director of fire Services, Mr Peter Cheung, said today (Friday). Speaking at the department's passing- out parade, Mr Cheung said fire-fighters are required to work in dangerous and difficult circumstances, at odd hours and under unfavourable situations.
"We are not only required to be skilful, but also required to have a dedicated attitude and a strong determination," he said.
Mr Cheung said the Fire Services Department had undergone significant changes and it had correspondingly raised its standards of services during the past three decades.
Noting that the department had been able to meet the enormous demands of the modern society of Hong Kong, he was confident that all graduating recruits would be capable of meeting or even bettering the high standards of services achieved.
The number of emergency calls the Fire Services Department received is rising every year. In 1995, Fire Services personnel responded to 31,014 fire, 21,420 special services and 425,343 ambulance calls, representing a 5.23%, 5.18% and 0.002% increase respectively over 1994.
On parade were 13 probation officers and 127 firemen who had completed their respective basic training courses and who would soon be posted out to various fire stations to gain more field experience.
