Licence of Mera Travel Services revoked
The Registrar of Travel Agents has, with effect from today (Tuesday), revoked the travel agents licence (licence number 350102) issued to the Mera Travel Services Ltd which has been suspended since April 23, 1996.
Mera Travel Services Ltd informed the Registrar of Travel Agents yesterday that it had decided not to carry on business as a travel agent.
A spokesman for Registrar of Travel Agents said the decision was made in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Travel Agents Ordinance (Cap 218).
He said: "Aggrieved outbound travellers with franked receipts showing payment of levies should get in touch with the Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong for assistance in completing the necessary legal procedures to obtain and enforce a judgement or proof of debt against the company regarding their losses.
"Should they be unable to recover their losses from the company, they will be entitled to claim an ex gratia payment of 80% of the outbound fares paid from the Travel Industry Compensation Fund."

Monetary Statistics for March
According to statistics published today (Tuesday) by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, total deposits rose in March 1996, while total loans and advances declined. Table 1 summarises figures for March 1996 and comparisons with earlier months. Table 2 provides an analysis of loans and advances for use in Hong Kong by major economic sector in the March quarter.
Deposits
Total deposits increased by 1.3% in March, following the 1.4% increase in February. This was attributable to increases of 1.5% and 1.1% in HK$ deposits and foreign currency deposits respectively.
