Fisheries study tour departs for Thailand
A 15-member fisheries delegation, comprising local fishermen and fish traders, will depart for Thailand on Sunday (January 28) to study fisheries technology and wholesale marketing facilities there.
To mark the occasion, a banner was presented to the study group leader, Mr Kwok So, today (Friday) by the Director of Agriculture and Fisheries, Dr Lawrence Lee.
Speaking before the presentation, Dr Lee said the main objective of organising study tours to overseas countries, which began in 1981, was to promote the development of Hong Kong's fishing industry.
"Through these tours, local fishermen have been able to share experience with their overseas counterparts, and to study their advanced fisheries production and marketing techniques and facilities," he said.
In the past 15 years, a number of fisheries study tours had been organised for local fishermen. Countries visited include Britain, the United States, Australia, China, Japan, Norway and Mexico.
Dr Lee noted that the itinerary of this year's study tour to Thailand included visits to a fisheries exhibition, wholesale fish markets, fish processing factories, shrimp farms and fisheries organisations. The group is expected to return on February
3.
The study visit is organised jointly by the Agriculture and Fisheries Department and the Fish Marketing Organisation.
