Container depot owner fined for breaching safety rules

The General Duties Provisions of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance (FIUO) have once again proved to be an "effective tool" in prosecuting construction site contractors and other industrial establishment owners for failing to take reasonably practicable measures to ensure the safety and health at work of their employees.

The comment was made by Labour Department's Chief Factory Inspector, Chan Tat-king, today (Thursday) following a recent court case in which the proprietor of a transportation company was fined a total of $200,000 by Fanling Magistracy for breaching the General Duties Provisions.

It was the highest fine ever imposed on industrial safety offences.

An industrial accident occurred in the evening of September 27 last year at a container depot at Ping Ha Road, Yuen Long, in which a container examiner was knocked down by a stacker crane.
