An Inland Revenue Department spokesman reminded the public that every person chargeable to tax for any year of assessment must inform the Commissioner in writing that he is so chargeable not later than 4 months after the end of the basis period for that year of assessment unless he had already been required to furnish a tax return.

A person who fails to notify chargeability without reasonable excuse shall be guilty of an offence and is liable to a maximum fine of $5,000 for each charge and a further fine of three times the amount of tax undercharged.

150,000 letters sent to electors to update data

The Registration and Electoral Office (REO) has sent out 150,000 letters to electors suspected to have outdated addresses.

These electors have to confirm their new address before the end of May.

An REO spokesman said if the office did not hear from the electors, their names would be put under the "List of proposed omission of names from the Final Register" in the Provisional Register to be published on June 21 for public inspection,

The public can make claims or objections regarding the particulars and omissions from the Provisional Register before July 5, and for the Revising Officer (a judicial officer) to make a ruling on these appeals.

If no objection or claim is heard, their names will be deleted from the Final Register to be published on August 1.

The spokesman explained that given the population mobility in Hong Kong, it was inevitable some of the information on the current electoral roll had become outdated since its publication last year.

The REO has identified suspected cases of incorrect particulars, through election mail returned undelivered and matching records maintained by the Housing Department, the Registration of Person's Office, the Housing Society and so on.
