She noted that the parade marked the highest number of female officers graduated at one time from the Customs and Excise Training School.

"You have competed on an equal footing with your male counterparts in a rigorous training environment and have come through with distinction," she added.

Mrs Chan also pointed out that customs officers would spend much of their time dealing with people and members of the public.

"No matter how trying the circumstances, you must never forget that everyone deserves to be treated with courtesy and understanding."

Investigation on Route 3 accident underway

A team of five experienced Factory Inspectors has been formed and has begun investigating into the causes of the industrial accident happened yesterday (Friday) in Kwai Chung in which two Thai workers died and four were injured, Chief Factory Inspector Mr Chan Tat-king said today (Saturday).

The team is working closely with the Highways Department and the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department.

Mr Chan, who went to the scene of the accident yesterday with the Assistant Commissioner for Labour, Mr Mak Sai-yiu, said the Labour Department would make every effort to find out the cause leading to the tragedy,

"The Factory Inspectorate is co-ordinating the investigation. We hope to identify the cause of the accident as soon as possible. Based on these findings, we will formulate advice to contractors carrying out similar operations so that accidents of this kind will not recur.

"If we discover that any party has been at fault and that safety law has been breached, the culprit will be prosecuted," Mr Chan said.
