WORKERS WHO ARE SUFFERING FROM OCCUPATIONAL DEAFNESS AS A RESULT OF PROLONGED EMPLOYMENT IN SPECIFIC NOISY OCCUPATIONS WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR COMPENSATION UNDER A PROPOSED SCHEME.

OUTLINING DETAILS OF THE COMPENSATION SCHEME AS PROVIDED FOR UNDER THE OCCUPATIONAL DEAFNESS (COMPENSATION) BILL TO BE GAZETTED TOMORROW (FRIDAY), A SPOKESMAN FOR THE EDUCATION AND MANPOWER BRANCH SAID WHILE THE SCHEME WAS A REMEDIAL MEASURE FOR DEALING WITH THE PROBLEM OF OCCUPATIONAL DEAFNESS, THE ADMINISTRATION WAS COMMITTED TO PREVENTING THE OCCURRENCE OF OCCUPATIONAL DEAFNESS AS A LONGER STRATEGY.

TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR COMPENSATION UNDER THE SCHEME, AN APPLICANT MUST SATISFY THE FOLLOWING DISABILITY AND OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

(A) HE SHOULD BE SUFFERING FROM SUBSTANTIAL SENSORINEURAL HEARING LOSS AS MEASURED BY A SPECIFIED STANDARD WHICH AMOUNTS TO SEVERE DIFFICULTY IN UNDERSTANDING HUMAN SPEECH;
